HYBRD Hybrid/On-Campus & Online - This course will focus on American Literature after WWII with an eye toward three key elements: its artistic innovation, its reflection of American cultural history (from roughly 1945 into the 1980s), and the inclusion of a diverse range of "voices" from an increasingly multicultural canon of literature. We will read a range of writers, including Ralph Ellison, Sylvia Plath, Richard Yates, Thomas Pynchon, Toni Morrison, and E.L. Doctorow. The focus will be on literary analysis AND the many ways this literature (and other more recent fiction) can be taught to high school students. Assignments will thus focus on the themes and perspective of these important writers and also approaches to teaching the literature as the center of lesson plans to engage students with the literature and meet educational objectives that are in the Common Core.
