Brief History

The Sport Management Program started at Western New England College in 1997, which was the same year the planning to create the Sport Management Association began. In1998, the association became an active organization in the college community. In 1997, Dr. Sharianne Walker joined the campus to teach and direct the sport management program. One year later Dr. Daniel Covell joined the School of Business as an Assistant Professor of sport management.

When the association first began in 1998, there were seven active members. In four short years, the organization has grown to over 65 active members. The SMA has grown to become one of the most active groups both on the campus and in the Great Springfeild community.

The Sport Management Association offers members the opportunity to participate in a variety of "learning beyond the classroom" activities. The Association sponsors sport industry speakers luncheons as well as trips to sport-related events such as the Baseball Winter Meetings, National Sport Forum and professional sporting events. The Association also sponsors sports facility tours and social events as well. Members are encouraged to apply the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to the management of real-world events and programs such as Midnight Madness and the Softball Tournament. The association takes great pride in community service and participating in such nationally known events as the Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony.
